Village Whist
From historical records we have learned that whist drives have been held in
Wenvoe for the best part of eighty years, making the game one of the most
enduring leisure activities in the village.
Whist drives started off
in the Reading Room ,now known as the Church Hall and have moved from venue
to venue – the cricket pavilion, back twice to the Reading Room, the cadet
hut in the old rope yard – now Orchard Close, the old school, the new school
and currently uses the Community Centre which was the old school.
In
the early days ,whist drives were held three times a week with Taly Cannan
as MC. Arthur Davies became MC in the 1950's and continued for 50 years. The
position is currently held by Bert Bates.
Our whist drives are held
once a month at present, but we are pleased to have kept up the tradition of
whist in the village.
We play for charity now and succeed in raising
a considerable amount each year for a nominated charity.

♥ ♣ VILLAGE WHIST ♦ ♠
Yet another successful and enjoyable evening with thirty players present. We were pleased to welcome a new player, Nicholas who had never played whist before. How new is that? However he soon picked up the game and at the end of the evening presented a very creditable score, and he said he would certainly be coming regularly. So there you have it non-whist players – it’s never too late to learn. You’ve heard the one about old dogs and new tricks! Not true!
Don’t forget we hold a whist drive in August which will be on the 12th.
Footnote: It was a treat to use the new kitchen at the Community Centre for the first time. It’s well designed and with plenty of space to move around, having managed with the old one for so many years.
All the organisations who use the C.C. will be well pleased with the change
