Village Hall
The Wenvoe Village Hall has been a venue for entertainment and activities for the villagers of Wenvoe and its neighbours for almost 80 years. As far back as the late 1930’s and ‘40s it hosted community dances and to this day the Wenvoe Village Hall organises several parties for the villagers throughout the year, most popular being the New Year’s Eve party.

As well as public events for the village, the hall is a favourite location for many local children’s parties, anniversary celebrations, wedding and engagement parties, and birthdays. And if it’s not parties, then it’s activities of interest for the villagers from sports such as Badminton, Dance and Karate (Tang soo doo) to Computer classes, Tuesday group and Leisure Group. Every school day the hall hosts morning playgroup sessions.

A committee of volunteers keep the Village Hall functioning smoothly and the building well maintained. This is done entirely by fund-raising and voluntary support.

Village Hall

The Hall held its AGM in June and was poorly attended by village residents, although it was advertised in the What’s On and the Hall’s notice board. I find myself writing via the What’ On again to make you all aware of the Village Halls purpose and benefit to us as a Community.

The land on which the hall stands on today was given to the residents of Wenvoe many years ago for a peppercorn rent. It was a tin shack, or so I’m told. All I remember is the large wooden stage with access either side and attending my Judo lessons. The hall supported the war, and housed the school children to eat their school dinners before the new  school and canteen were built in 1970. The hall was rebuilt with the help of local residents in 1974 and continued to hold many community events such as dances, talent shows, local weddings and other special occasions It was a time when life seemed good and everyone supported the village they lived in.

Today the Village Hall is a new building, surrounded by large numbers of residents due to the housing developments over the years. However, even though the village has grown in size we still cannot manage 12 people to come forward to support the village hall.

Without a Management Committee of local  residents, the hall and the land it stands on will  be handed back to the landowners to do with as they see fit, as stated in the hall constitution.

Do you really want more houses or a new block of  flats where the village hall stands? Do you want to lose your Playgroup, Leisure Group, Tuesday  Group, Sports and Badminton and travel to Barry or  Ely?

We need you to come forward and support your hall  by serving on the Management Committee as well as helping to support or attend any events we may arrange to raise funds to keep the hall standing and in use

Unfortunately at this time, we have to advise that due to lack of support, we are unable to offer New Year’s Eve at the Village Hall this year for adults which will be very disappointing for some. If you have any suggestions as to how to raise funds for the Village Hall or perhaps any ideas as to what we can do for NEW YEAR’S EVE, please post them through the Village Hall’s letter box for the attention of the Management Committee. If you can join the committee or help in some way please phone me on 20594724.

Remember, if you wish to hire the Hall for a special occasion, do not follow the daily bookings as advertised in the What’s On. We can be flexible as we are able to negotiate with regular hirers for that special wedding, anniversary or occasion. You can contact me by emailing sandra@jtmorgansbutchers.com or by phoning 07974 877917 I look forward to hearing your thoughts and ideas.
