BEST KEPT VILLAGE PRIZEGIVING.

The Best Kept Village Competition Prizegiving  Dinner was held on the 14th July 2010 at Wenvoe Village Hall. This year, the Judge of the Best Village Competit  on was Mr. Robert Moore a Trustee of Cowbridge Physic Garden. During his tour of The Vale he found that much work had been undertaken in maintaining the high standards of previous years. Many old features had been restored such as old water-pumps, old telephone kiosks and  village signs. There was also a total lack of rubbish wherever he went. The overall work reflected community effort which is, of course, the “beating heart of The vale”. The winning village was Ystradowen. 2nd Wenvoe. 3rd Michaelston Le Pit and joint 4th Llanmaes and Gileston. The School Competition had drawn 20 entries and the prizegiving was held at Dyffryn Gardens this year with 75 children attending the event. In first place was St. Andrews School with St. Nicholas placed second. In the competition for five year olds,  Bute College Nursery won 1st  lace, 2nd place Cadoxton 3rd place Peterston-super-Ely and highly commended was Llandough Nursery.

The Special Features Award was judged by Mr. Richard Skinner, Secretary of the Best Kept Village  Competition. Flemingston was given one award for their Village entry signs which had been decorated with planters. The North Sign featured a ‘natural’ garden. The South Sign a summer cottage garden  and the West Sign an architectural garden with various grasses and rushes indicating vertical lines (There is no East Sign) These features had been developed by a local schoolgirl as part of her community studies in relation to her forthcoming examinations.

Wenvoe was also given an award for its Orchid Field. This had been part of an old meadow and  during the last five years had been cleared by volunteers under the direction of Wenvoe Wildlife Group. Many hours had been spent in developing this feature which now forms part of a countryside walk.

Messrs Cemex UK had sponsored the competition and indicated that they would do so again in 2011
